Concepción Hotel in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, is a charming and historic adults-only boutique hotel that offers a colorful feast for the eyes from the moment you enter the foyer. This was my favorite hotel during a run-around tour with my daughter in Mexico. A stunning and unique blend of Mexican architecture and plush modern comforts, staying here is like bedding down in a gallery of art with no screaming kids to upset the serene vibe. This hotel offers so much more than just a pillow for your head; it’s a total immersion in the city's culture and art.

There’s no fancy driveway to arrive at—instead, it’s a brilliantly colored façade facing the street, which is opposite Plaza de la Soledad, that hides the amazing interior once you walk through massive wooden doors. At the time that we were there, the Day of the Dead had occurred only a few days before, so skeletons smothered the wall in gay abandon with a large quirky skeleton peering down from the rooftop. You immediately know that you will be staying somewhere special. The building itself is a beautifully restored colonial structure, featuring classic adobe walls, colorful tiles, and lush courtyards filled with native plants and the brilliant flash of yellow and orange marigold flowers, in-your-face, dynamic, and contemporary art canvasses plus curious adornments such as cute rabbit figures perched on steps. These little rabbits, appearing to be hopping up the stairs, definitely piqued my curiosity. Apparently, rabbits, not just in San Miguel de Allende but in the whole of Mexico, hold a significant and deep-rooted meaning in Mexican culture. Rabbits, according to Aztec mythology, represent a connection to ancient, pre-Hispanic roots, linked to the moon and fertility, symbolizing the cycle of life.

Literally everywhere you look, there is something that jumps out at you in a brilliant display of living culture. It’s a visual feast in its entirety, from the perfectly placed comfy lounge chairs outside rooms in the atrium area to the sheltered, wide-hanging verandahs on the second level. The courtyards sparkle in the mornings with dappled sunlight filtering through, while at night, it’s a playground for lighting that accentuates the different tones splashed on the adobe walls. The emerald water of the swimming pool, with its tinkling water fountain, literally calls out for you to take a dip, while the breakfast area sits a few steps above this relaxing, pretty setting.
