About Sarah

After two years living and working in Europe, motivational speaker Sarah Dodd started The Nomadic Dreamer, a rapidly growing bilingual website reaching over 100 countries, about 500,000 visits per month, and more than 50,000 followers on social media. She has traveled to over 40 countries as a solo female traveler and hitchhiker, and also represents the Yoodreams Foundation, dedicated to helping others achieve their personal and professional dreams.

Let’s Get to Know Sarah

We asked Sarah some questions about her life as a traveller and blogger:

What is your favourite destination and why?

It’s hard to say. As far as beauty, nothing beats the small country of Montenegro. However, as far as nightlife and things to do, Berlin or Paris [are better choices]. I have lived in Spain for around two and a half years and nothing beats the Basque Country in the north. There are so many amazing places!

What was your worst or scariest travel moment?

My scariest moment travelling was when I was in Poland and hitchhiking to Lviv, Ukraine. It took hours for me to get picked up and I had to change cars five times. In the last car, I was riding with a driver who did not speak English well, but through the little communication we did have, I thought we had everything clear.

After over an hour, I saw we were going in the opposite direction of Lviv. What I failed to understand is that we had to first go to another city and do some paperwork, and then we were going to Lviv. I was out in the middle of nowhere and he was taking me on a wild journey to all of these places, and when we arrived at the border there was a four hour wait in the middle of the night (not a time to be hitchhiking).

Luckily, everything was good, and I got to my hotel at 3am, but it was a 12 hour journey, and I am so blessed the man was truly a good man and did not harm me!

What's one thing you never travel without?

Hands down my cell phone. As a solo traveler and after hitchhiking through 35 countries, I would not have done it without that. I used it for all maps, calling, flashlights, blogging, camera, etc.

What is your best piece of advice to new travellers?

Don’t be afraid to travel alone. I was nervous at first, but after doing it, my life changed forever. You learn so many new things about yourself and are forced out of your comfort zone in an incredible way! Also, just do the things you are afraid to do. Mine were hitchhiking, traveling alone, bungee jumping, walking the Camino de Santiago, skydiving, and public speaking, and now I have done all of them and become a motivational speaker.

What travel blogs do you follow?

I have friendships with many bloggers and I enjoy the moments when they share their stories, however I do not follow daily or weekly any blogs. I tend to follow more of the motivational, positive living blogs.

What made you start a travel blog?

I first started it to share my experiences with friends and family, and then I realized that people were loving it and thousands of people were following it in a short time. Since then, I have turned it into my full-time work.

What audience does your blog target?

My website is in English and Spanish, so it targets people in Spanish-speaking countries, as well as English. Almost every entry is tied to motivation, so people that are seeking to live a positive life often read and follow. Since I have traveled as a solo female across 40 countries, and only by hitchhiking, I have thousands of followers of that nature.

Is your blog mostly experience-based, travel tips, destination guides, or is it in a different style?

Everything I write is experience-based. If I give any tips, it’s because I have first used them.

Have you received any notable awards or recognitions?

I received some awards, but I honestly don’t know which ones they are.

Which social media channel do you think helps your blog most?

Facebook and Twitter, however most of my viewers are just from Google search and other avenues.

What advice do you have for new travel bloggers?

Consistency, consistency, consistency! Wait, did I say consistency? This is the key.
