Airport lounges used to be available only to first-class, business, and savvy flyers. Now they are an oasis of calm for all passengers. So, before settling in an uncomfortable terminal seat and eating an overpriced sandwich, consider these options to get airport lounge access for less:
One-off airport lounge pass
One of the easiest ways is to buy a pass for a single visit. Many airports have independent lounges that welcome passengers regardless of their airline. This can be good value if you have several hours to kill before a flight. Check Lounge Pass, as a single lounge pass might work out cheaper. Some lounges offer cheaper rates when reserved in advance, while walk-up prices can be higher.
Airport lounge membership
For frequent travellers, an airport lounge membership, such as Priority Pass, could be a better fit, as it provides access to participating lounges at airports worldwide. The trick is to work out how often you'll realistically use it. If you only take one or two flights a year, paying for individual visits may be cheaper. But if you regularly travel internationally, particularly with connections, membership can potentially offer much better value. Check whether the airports and terminals you use most often have participating lounges.
Check for bank and credit card perks
Some bank, travel and premium credit cards include airport lounge benefits, either through complimentary visits or access to a lounge membership programme. For regular travellers, these benefits can help offset the cost of an otherwise expensive annual card fee. Consider the annual fee alongside other benefits such as travel insurance, rewards, hotel perks and foreign-exchange benefits. Also check the card's current conditions.
Frequent-flyer status
Many airlines and airline alliances offer lounge access as part of their higher frequent-flyer tiers. This means you could access a lounge even when travelling in economy, depending on the airline, route and status level.
Look for airline lounge passes
Some airlines let passengers who don't qualify for complimentary access buy an airport lounge pass. Depending on the airline, you may be able to buy lounge passes during booking, through the airline's website or app, or at the airport. Check whether the pass is valid for your particular terminal, as a lounge on the other side of the airport is not much use if you cannot reach it.
Source lounge promotions
Airport lounge operators, travel companies and financial institutions sometimes offer discounted passes, complimentary visits or reduced membership prices.
Use guest privileges
Travelling with someone who already has lounge access? Some airport lounges and premium cards allow members to bring guests, although charges and conditions vary. If you are travelling as a couple or family, this can sometimes work out cheaper than purchasing separate passes.
Lounge access for a long layover
The longer you are at an airport, the more valuable a lounge can become. Paying for two hours might not seem worthwhile if you have a short wait. But if you have a five-hour connection, the equation changes. You could have a meal, charge your devices and escape the crowds. Remember that many lounges have maximum stay periods.
Alternatives
If you want to work, an airport business centre or dedicated workspace may be cheaper. If sleep is a priority due to an overnight connection, a sleeping pod or airport hotel might be better.
