For music-loving travellers, September and October are among the most rewarding months of the year to hit the road and experience some chilled-out jazz festivals. Here are some events worth considering for an autumn musical escape.
Istanbul, Türkiye: Akbank Jazz Festival
Istanbul hosts the 36th Akbank Jazz Festival from September 26 to October 11. One of the nation's longest-running jazz events, the festival spreads performances across venues throughout the city, creating an opportunity to experience contemporary jazz alongside Istanbul's extraordinary cultural heritage.
The 2026 programme demonstrates just how broad modern jazz has become. International names include Arturo Sandoval, James Carter, Joe Armon-Jones, Kassa Overall, Nicole Zuraitis and Yasmine Hamdan, alongside Turkish and emerging artists. The programme moves from traditional jazz and improvisation through electronic, experimental and genre-crossing sounds.
For visitors, the festival provides an ideal excuse to explore Istanbul. Spend the day visiting the Hagia Sophia area, Grand Bazaar or Bosphorus before heading to an evening concert. Alternatively, combine performances with the city's restaurants, rooftop bars and vibrant nightlife.
Villars, Switzerland: Montreux Jazz Festival Spotlight
Switzerland's legendary Montreux Jazz Festival traditionally takes place in July, so it is not an autumn festival in the conventional sense. However, the organisation has introduced the MJF Spotlight Sessions, bringing its musical influence into the autumn.
The 2026 Spotlight Sessions take place in Villars-sur-Ollon on October 2–3 and 9–10, with four emerging artists selected by the Montreux Jazz Festival's programming team performing at the Théâtre du Villars Palace.
Villars itself is worth adding to a longer Swiss itinerary. The resort is surrounded by Alpine scenery and provides opportunities for walking, cycling and enjoying mountain landscapes, while nearby towns and Lake Geneva offer additional cultural attractions.
If your heart is set on the full Montreux experience, meanwhile, plan ahead for the main festival as it remains one of Europe's most enduring and important music events.
Cologne Jazzweek
Another highlight is the Cologne Jazzweek, Germany, from September 5-11. The festival brings together musicians from Cologne, Germany and the international jazz scene, with performances staged across the city.
This year’s events includes artists such as Avishai Cohen, Sam Gendel, Olga Reznichenko, Peter Evans, Evan Parker and Kalia Vandever.
For visitors, Cologne offers considerably more than the festival itself. The city's cathedral, museums, riverside walks, breweries and restaurants make it an easy destination for a long weekend.
You could also include the Jazz & Garonne in France from September 26 to October 11. It takes place around Marmande in southwest France. The festival focuses on jazz and improvised music, with performances in theatres, churches and community venues. Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu, Benny Lackner Quintet, Mathias Lévy & Lou Tavano and the Didier Ithursarry and Christophe Monniot Duo are among those set to feature.

Other top international jazz festivals for travellers include:
Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival, Willemstad, Curaçao, September 3-5. Based at a Caribbean beach resort, it meets world-class soul, Latin, and jazz. Headliners include Jon Batiste, Toto, and Rubén Blades.
DC JazzFest, Washington DC, USA: September 2–6. Includes urban culture and riverside performances, with the grand finale weekend at The Wharf along the Potomac River.
Jozenji Street Jazz Festival, Sendai, Miyagi, Japan: September 12–13. Over 40 free stages are scattered through public parks and city streets.
Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival from September 17–20 offers multi-day performances and special Jazz Train travel packages.
Autumn runs
As October draws to a close, Finland takes centre stage with the Tampere Jazz Happening, running from October 29 to November 1. Established in 1982, the festival has developed a reputation for adventurous modern jazz, with programming influenced by concert music, rock and world music. The 45th edition has the Netherlands as its theme country, highlighting Dutch jazz alongside international performers.
Tampere is an excellent autumn destination in its own right, with museums, saunas, restaurants and a strong cultural scene. Travellers should be prepared for shorter days and cooler temperatures, but that simply adds to the appeal of an atmospheric Nordic city break.
November concludes the season with one of Europe's most extensive jazz events: the London Jazz Festival, running from November 13–22. The festival traditionally spreads performances across venues throughout the capital. With world-class museums, theatres, galleries, restaurants and nightlife, it makes for an ideal city break.
