Croatia's capital is often celebrated for its historic Upper Town, vibrant café culture and colourful markets, but Zagreb also offers one of the country's most exciting dining scenes. During our stay, my husband Ivan and I discovered two restaurants that couldn't have been more different, yet together perfectly capture the city's culinary identity. One delivered Michelin-starred artistry, the other traditional Croatian comfort food. Both were unforgettable.

Our evening at Noel, Zagreb's Michelin-starred restaurant, was more than dinner—it was a carefully orchestrated journey through flavour, artistry and Croatian hospitality. From the moment we arrived, the sleek contemporary interior, intimate atmosphere and impeccable service created a sense of anticipation. Every detail had been thoughtfully considered, from the elegant table setting to the carefully selected cutlery and handcrafted plates chosen to complement each individual course.

The tasting menu, aptly named Summer Essence, celebrated Croatia's freshest seasonal produce, interpreted through French and Italian culinary influences. Each course was paired with exceptional wines from Croatia's renowned wine regions, alongside carefully selected bottles from France and Lebanon. Every pairing enhanced the flavours on the plate, creating a harmonious balance between food and wine.

Before the tasting menu truly began, Noel set the tone with a single bite that perfectly captured the restaurant's philosophy. Presented on a sculpted porcelain hand, this delicate canapé was far more than an appetiser—it was an invitation to experience cuisine as art. Crisp, creamy and wonderfully fresh, every element delivered contrasting textures and flavours in a single mouthful. It disappeared almost instantly, yet the memory lingered long after the evening had ended. It was proof that sometimes the smallest dish leaves the greatest impression.

As the evening unfolded, each course demonstrated the restaurant's remarkable attention to detail. Every plate told a story, engaging not only the palate but also the senses of sight, touch and even emotion.

One dessert in particular embodied Noel's creative philosophy. The Floating Island arrived beneath a delicate glass cloche crowned with a tiny hand-blown glass bird. At first glance, it appeared almost too beautiful to disturb. The menu described it simply as citrus fruits with goat's yoghurt, yet lifting the glass dome released fragrant citrus aromas before revealing a dessert that was elegant, refreshing and surprisingly light. It perfectly illustrated Noel's ability to transform simple seasonal ingredients into edible works of art through imagination, craftsmanship and precision.

Noel embraces the concept of synesthesia, where cuisine and art merge into a multi-sensory experience. It is an evening designed to be savoured slowly, making it an ideal destination for travellers celebrating a special occasion or seeking one of Croatia's finest dining experiences.

The following day, our culinary journey took us in an entirely different direction.

Not every memorable meal requires a Michelin star. Sometimes the most satisfying experiences are found in restaurants where locals gather to enjoy recipes that have been lovingly prepared for generations.

Batak is one of Croatia's most popular restaurant chains, with locations throughout Zagreb and in cities including Rijeka, Split, Pula and Makarska. Known for its generous portions, friendly service and affordable prices, Batak specialises in traditional Croatian cuisine and expertly grilled meats, making it an excellent choice for travellers wanting an authentic local meal without stretching the budget.

While many diners come for the famous ćevapi and mixed grills, my family's all-time favourite is Punjene Paprike, Croatia's beloved stuffed peppers. Tender capsicums are generously filled with seasoned minced meat and rice, slowly cooked in a rich tomato sauce and served over creamy mashed potatoes. It is the kind of dish that evokes memories of home cooking, family gatherings and comforting Sunday lunches.

For me, it earns my five-lick rating of deliciousness—the highest compliment I can give. Rich, comforting and full of flavour, it is a wonderful introduction to traditional Croatian cuisine and exceptional value for money.

Experiencing Noel and Batak within twenty-four hours perfectly demonstrated the diversity of Zagreb's dining scene. One celebrates culinary innovation through artistic presentation and refined technique; the other honours Croatia's rich culinary traditions with generous, honest cooking that locals have loved for generations.

Whether your travel budget allows for a Michelin-starred tasting menu or simply a hearty plate of stuffed peppers, Zagreb proves that outstanding food can be found at every price point. Sometimes the finest travel memories are created not only by where we go, but by what we share around the table.
